Adrenal Cancer Treatment in Glendale, Arizona (AZ)

Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, or a combination approach as well as experimental treatments such as biologic therapy or targeted therapy are among today's treatment options for adrenal cancer. Talk to your doctor about the advantages and disadvantages of each type of treatment and to create a treatment plan that is right for you.

Traditional Treatment Approaches for Adrenal Cancer

Open surgery: Adrenal cancer is most commonly treated by completely removing the adrenal glands. Open surgery is the most common method of adrenal gland removal. During open surgery, your doctor will access the kidneys and adrenal glands through a large incision in you abdomen. If your surgeon sees that the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes or surrounding tissue, the affected tissue will also be removed.

Laparoscopic surgery: Some studies indicate that laparoscopic surgery (surgery performed with tiny instruments through several small incisions) may effectively eliminate smaller, early-stage adrenal cancer tumors. Talk to your doctor about the best surgical option for your specific cancer.

Radiation therapy: This therapy uses high energy x-rays to kill cancer cells and halt their growth. Radiation may be administered externally by an outside machine which directs radiation toward the cancer cells. Radiation may also be administered internally via radioactive materials which are sealed inside of seeds, wires, needles, or catheters. During internal radiation treatment, your doctor will implant the radioactive agent directly into or next to the cancer cells. Your doctor will determine which radioactive treatment is most effective based on the stage of your cancer.

Chemotherapy: This therapy uses drugs or a combination of drugs (combination chemotherapy) to kill cancer cells and halt their growth. Chemotherapy drugs can be given orally, injected into a vein, or placed near the cancer cells. Your doctor will choose chemotherapy drugs based on the stage of your cancer.

Experimental Yet Promising Treatments for Adrenal Cancer

Some adrenal cancer treatments are still experimental in their use but show promise.

Biologic therapy: Also known as immunotherapy or biotherapy, biologic therapy attempts to engage the body’s own immune system in the fight against cancer by administering special substances (either man-made or found in your body) to stimulate your immune system.
Targeted therapy: One of the problems with chemotherapy and radiation therapy is that both procedures kill both cancer cells and non-cancer cells.

Targeted therapy attempts to leave healthy cells intact by targeting only specific cancer cells using specially formulated drugs or other substances.

Both biologic therapy and targeted therapy are still considered experimental procedures. Clinical trials are underway to determine their safety and effectiveness.

Getting an accurate diagnosis is the first step in effective treatment. There are many methods your doctor may use to diagnose adrenal cancer. Prognosis for adrenal cancer treatments depends on your overall health, the stage of your cancer, and how aggressively the tumor is spreading. Treatment outcome is most promising when the surgeon can completely remove the cancer through surgery.
