Urologic Oncology in Glendale, Arizona (AZ)
More potent and effective treatments for cancer are available to your
doctor than ever before. Major advances in chemotherapy, radiation
therapy, and surgery make these traditional cancer treatments more
effective than ever. Additionally, cutting edge research has yielded an
expanding array of new treatments to complement traditional cancer
treatments. More accurate diagnostics enables your doctor to detect
cancer earlier than in previous generations.
Traditional Oncology Procedures
Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. The most common types of urological cancers treated with chemotherapy include:
- prostate cancer
- bladder cancer
- kidney cancer
- testicular cancer
Urethral cancer and penile cancer may also respond well to chemotherapy.
Radiation therapy can be used in conjunction with other therapies. External radiation therapy uses radiation from a machine outside the body to kill cancer cells. Internal radiation therapy
is a procedure in which your doctor places a radioactive substance into
or near the cancer and seals it inside seeds, wires, needles or
catheters.
Surgery is a tool oncologists use to
physically remove cancer-infected areas. Your doctor may perform
traditional open surgery in which a large incision is made to access and
remove cancerous tissue. Laparoscopy is a newer, less invasive
surgery in which smaller incisions are made and tiny tools are used to
remove cancer cells. Your surgeon may be specially trained in the da Vinci system which uses robotic arms to perform fine surgical cuts and procedures.Newer Oncology Procedures
Newer cancer treatments that are being developed to treat some kinds of cancer and precancerous conditions include cryosurgery, which uses cold to target cancer cells, and radiofrequency ablation
which uses heat to target cancer cells. Though still under study, these
methods offer some shorter recovery times and fewer side effects.
Stem cell transplantation
stimulates the body’s own immune response to combat cancer. Stem cell
transplantation uses immature blood cells to stimulate healthy blood
cell growth which may be helpful in the treatment of aggressive
testicular cancer.
New drugs are being developed to target specific characteristics of cancer cells. Sorafenib, sunitinib, and everolimus are new drugs which directly target proteins or other molecules that fuel cancer cell growth in kidney cancer.
